2/4 Spice(3 days past; 3 does) She was fine at dinner time, but stringing birthing goo by 8:30pm. She seemed in distress. I gloved up and checked for nose & toes. The first kid was trying to come out back first and was down behind her udder. I finally managed to get it repositioned and out. Poor Spice was worn out and not pushing any more. I felt around and found and pulled two more kids. They came out back feet first. Mom is recovering well and the kids are up and active. First up was 1/29 Luna(on her due date/3 does)...she kidded just before I got home from work. Had 3 doelings unassisted. Unfortunately, she didn't clean the sac off the face of her first one, so we lost her. The other two are up bouncing around and doing fine. It is always sad to lose one. 2/1 Piper(on her due date; 3 bucks) Somehow she managed to do this in between night checks and the same thing happened...first time mom and she didn't clean the face on her first one. We lost him as well. Other two are cute as could be. 2/1 Icee(1 day past; 2 bucks/1 doe)...she kidded in the afternoon. Her doeling came first, than two bucklings. I was on hand & cleaned noses, but no birthing assistance was needed. 2/6 Heidi(on her due date; 1 buck/2 does) Heidi kidded mid afternoon. First kid presented head first, no legs. I pushed it back in an repositioned it & she delivered it on her own. Labor stalled, I went in to check and found a mummy fetus. Pulled that one. Heidi then delivered another doeling. I thought she was done, but maybe 30 minutes later, she delivered a buckling. The biggest one came last. She was slow to expel the placenta, but did. I am monitoring her temperature. She is eating and milking well. Kids are fine. 2/7 Isabel(On her due date; 2 bucks/1 doe) Isabel's labor was complicated by the fact that she hurt her back left ankle a month ago and has been wearing a cast...ie not moving around much. I noticed her stringing goo mid-morning. She was contentedly munching on hay, so I grabbed a book and settled down near her to read and keep watch. Several hours passed and nothing seemed to happen. I gloved up and went in to check position. First kid was trying to come out hocks first. I repositioned him, cupping his feet so as not to puncture the uterus and she delivery him back feet first. The next two followed quickly, on normal front feet first, and the other back feet first as well. Nubian kids are so cute. These are all black roan with frosted ears and tan points & some white. Isabel seems to be getting around better without all the extra baby weight. 2/9 Trixie(2 days early; 1 doe) Trixie surprised me. She ate breakfast & showed no evidence of an impending kidding. She then delivered and had the baby dried off and up and nursing by the noon barn check. Way to go Trixie. Traditional marked doeling. Two more to go. Lyric is 2 days past due and then River is due 2/27 & I'll be done with spring kidding season here.
Babies are coming...my first goat kids of the season are due later this week. I can't wait.1/26/2015 My girls started coming in to heat one right after another. If things go as I would like them to, everyone is now bred. Spring babies here we come.
My Muscovy numbers have sky rocketed this summer. They are such determined brooders. Anybody want some ducks?
